Throughout the years, multiple national, state and local organizations have come together to promote boating safety in communities across the United States. The success of these efforts is evident in the achievements of the activities themselves – including the distribution of hundreds of thousands of printed materials, as well as hundreds of print and broadcast media stories, resulting in literally millions of impressions–all on the importance of boating safety. Most recently, the U.S. Coast Guard has decided to take one step further in this overall outreach effort–and measure success not just by the activities themselves, but by how these activities actually inspire boaters to adopt tangible precautions on the water–specifically wearing a life jacket.

Toward this end, the U.S. Coast Guard has selected the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in California as the site for a first-ever pilot program, designed to effectively measure the impact of intensive marketing on life jacket wear rates.

The theme of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Campaign will mirror the national effort to promote life jacket wear to recreational boaters across the country– themed “Wear It!” In order to personalize the local Delta campaign, the theme will be “Wear It California!”

Promotion activities will include radio advertising, events, signage at boat ramps, and marinas, celebrity appearances, and a customized “Campaign Boat” personed by trained staff who will cruise the Delta throughout the summer months, distributing life jackets and safety messages to boaters.
